At least the ATF didn't murder him.

It is already a legal precedent that law enforcement may lie to citizens further their investigations. Apparently they simply take it one step further and they can perjure themselves at will. ATF should all be homeless, friendless, unemployable pariahs.

Ditto that.

You left out "unarmed", since that's the status they want for us.

Onward, Christian soldiers!

As a former LEO and attorney, I hate to think about the damage their mistakes and false statements have done to the remainder of the case - not to mention the damage that has been done to the contributing agencies' respect and credibility in the courthouse. Obvious that this case was very poorly conducted and supervised. Defense attorneys will be using this case for years to come.

Most of the defendants are likely using public defenders and thus will get rammed hard regardless of the incompetence of the investigators

Exactly. This was a rarity.

They really Don't Care about the "Damage" to the remainder of their cases. It just means future employment and paychecks. Guilty/Innocent are just "words" like "due process" or other obsolete terminology.

Maybe all the ATF agents and officers involved should serve the 115 year sentence and pay the 17 million dollar fine. Ruined a man's life. Ruin theirs. NO MORE ATF!!!!

At this point we can always assume the AFT is lying if verifiable supporting evidence isn't provided.

There no doubt that ATF is a rogue, renegade, out of control agency. Barely a week goes by that this storm trooper gang violates the Constitutional and/or civil rights of law abiding American taxpayers. When they aren't arresting or killing legal gun owners, they are manipulating or changing rules and laws regarding firearms. It is time to abolish the ATF, along with the other rogue agencies, FBI and CIA.

To add insult to injury, South Carolina is (supposed) a Second Amendment Sanctuary state. This was passed with the Open Carry law (2022?). AG Alan Wilson are you paying attention? This law needs to be enforced. STOP THE OPPRESSION OF LEGAL, LAW ABIDING GUNOWNERS NOW.

Rogue, renegade, and out of control is on point. Never forget what they did at the Waco siege, that's the ATF and others showing their true colours. It's become (not is becoming) guilty until proven innocent, unfortunately. This case is the perfect example of why it is meant to be the opposite, because the harm and injustice that can be inflicted on someone innocent is so much worse of a mistake than the failure to bring justice on someone guilty.

Pure speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a case of facial recognition tech gone wrong in their "advanced, intelligence-based, multi-faceted" LEO, and possibly other surveillance tech based on metadata like Snowden talks about. How else do you screw up so bad you end up surveilling someone while thinking he's someone else? They could have put the actual suspect's face into their system, then this poor man popped up in the result of who it was, and without any attempt to verify the information, they blindly accepted it because maybe they looked similar and it's what it said, and plus, he's a black gun owner.

Facial recognition is used increasingly everywhere, including by law enforcement, and because it's so unpopular, no one is eager to admit it; especially when it messes up, which happens a lot more than one might think. Even moreso with certain demographics the AI models aren't as well trained at, such as black people in particular, where just years ago some companies like Google got in trouble and had to turn off AI image recognition searches on phone libraries since it seriously couldn't tell the difference between someone black and a gorilla. While it may have improved a bit since then, there's no telling how up-to-date anyone keeps their surveillance systems. anyway.

Whatever happened, there should be an investigation to find out and prevent it in the future. If they're using facial recognition—which I'm quite sceptical that it should be legal, but if they are—it's absurd they wouldn't be trained to know it can be wrong and the information needs verified. If that wasn't it, it's hard for me to imagine it wasn't an even dumber mistake. Cases like this are the worst since it could happen to anyone, and they went and terrorised an innocent person over nothing and there's nothing anyone could do in such a situation to prevent it from happening to them, since it's someone else's mistake. And mistakes harming others should have consequences for those who make them.
