Mr. Williams, down your way you have a Rep named Brodeur (sp) who is a RINO Republican and has been casting aspersions of this State bill. Is some thing being down to help him to see the Light of Freedom?
Meanwhile the Washington State legislature keeps proving to me that my leaving that state was wise, as they gut the 2nd Amendment and the Washington state Constitution. They're likely to lose in court post-Bruen, but it's ridiculous.
The Left continues to do what the Left does best. Whine, mislead and outright lie.
Nice piece Lee, thanks. I'm still surprised at how much obfuscation and misrepresentation people let writers like this Cerabino guy get away with. It seems to me that too many people are not only born with addictive personalities but are easily brainwashed and unable to develop critical thinking skills, even with plenty of help.
Lucky for us the government schools haven't destroyed the minds of enough kids, yet, that we may still be able to correct the direction this country is headed and pull the ships of state out of the gutters.
The quality of the law makers up there is shockingly low. From one Republican senator insisting this bill is ok because we “register” guns when purchasing to the universal unhinged retardation of the Democrats I’m surprised “our” government works at all. One pro gun speaker made some excellent points about DeSantis. If he can’t even get open carry of handguns with an 80% supermajority how is he going to deal with Congress? Between signing a massive tax increase, letting Disney mostly off the hook, watering down the medical freedom bill, and supposedly being willing to sign Randy Fine’s “hate crime” bill, I don’t think he’s the strong man many hoped for.
The one issue with "open carry" is just because you could open carry, should you? I have my doubts about how many people really want to see gun owners parading around with their guns; "Look at me I've got a gun!" Because that is exactly what happened when the shall issue law passed, some gun owners decided they could now "Parade" up and down busy streets, as in Hollywood Blvd. (FL) with their six shooter strapped on and within days open carry was banned. I'm sure the media hyped up the aforementioned scenario some, but I distinctly remember when this happened.
Should open carry be included in this legislation, of course. You have some valid points as does Mike, but Florida has some heavily populated solid blue counties that have a lot of political power / input. I now live in St. Johns County most people around here probably wouldn't even notice someone carrying unconcealed, I also lived in Broward County and you'd probably see just the opposite there.
IMO open carry is overrated, but should it be illegal? No, and it would nullify Florida's stupid printing rule.
You're not wrong but the Florida ban was extreme media hype plus Janet Reno and a legislature on edge. FSA was strongly against shall issue and said they loved open carry. Literally. Tactically, I think open carry is usually not a good idea. But I think sometimes it's probably better. As you say, as a right, it doesn't really matter though-it needs to be legal. Open carry of handguns most people don't seem to care. I have done it many times and is very common in the blue area my wife's family is from in Arizona. Deep, deep blue area. I think long gun open carry would present the problems you mention, but again, it's actually legal in many states, just not done very often.
Your reflection on the governor's dealing with Congress seems to misunderstand the idea of our system of representative government. The governor isn't the one writing the laws. He's not the one pushing for corrections, the people's representatives have that responsibility. The governor is the one to make certain the machine is well lubricated and functioning. He's there to stop things when they appear to have run off the tracks.
I disagree. He has pushed a milktoast legislature to do everything good so far, from redistricting, to covid/mrna protections, DEI reform, etc. He can’t force them but the fact is other Republican candidates were able to get full constitutional carry with higher percentage of democrats in their legislatures.
Amongst other things, DeSantis is a neo-conservative in MAGA clothing. He knows that without some type of Second Amendment win, his reputation within the state as well as the nation will greatly diminish due to the plurality of conservative voters that live in Florida. He rode the wave of "hitting Disney in the pocketbook" when it was the current thing to do, then walked back his hardline stance, or at least kept quiet about others doing so, once the attention of the voters had shifted.
People are touting him as a replacement for Trump, but what I am seeing is a wolf in Trump's clothing.
It sure seems like you're mostly unhappy with the incomplete turnout for this bill (me, too, btw) but again, that's not all on the person in the executive seat. Different reps in different legislatures across the country have different agendas.
FL has a huge population and continuing influx of retirees from the New England area and they lean strongly to the left. You've correctly identified that we do have a pretty weak legislature (and some outright adversaries on both sides) and therein is our biggest difficulty in quick corrections.
But, maybe that actually reflects their districts.
Albert Einstein once said, "The leader is one who, out of the clutter, brings simplicity … out of discord, harmony … and out of difficulty, opportunity." Being a leader is no easy task -- it takes hard work, courage and risk-taking.
Don’t get me wrong, if we grade on a curve, we are very lucky to have him. This issue just wasn’t as important to him. Kemp and Abbott went to gun stores and had a presser devoted to constitutional carry and told the media exactly what they wanted. This bill is to check a box. Gun owners need to do more in the primaries to elect better Republicans for sure.

I shall check, sir.
