Factchecking the President's recent comments on guns
During his first joint address to Congress earlier this week, President Biden revised history and showed little regard for the truth.
During his first joint address to Congress earlier this week, President Joe Biden spent most of his time addressing the economy (10:38 minutes), foreign policy (6:11 minutes) and infrastructure (5:04 minutes).
He talked about gun control for a total of 3:47 minutes.
Pretty much everything he said about guns was either manipulative, revisionist or an outright lie.
The President’s key points:
"I need not tell anyone this, but gun violence has become an epidemic in America," Biden said. "Look, I don't want to become more confrontational. We need more Senate Republicans to join the overall majority of Democratic colleagues and close the loopholes required in background check purchases of guns. We need a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines."
Let’s dissect the President’s comments line by line:
Gaslighting
"I need not tell anyone this, but gun violence has become an epidemic in America," he said.
First, “I need not tell you this” is classic gaslighting — a form of “psychological manipulation in which a person or a group covertly sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or group, making them question their own memory, perception, or judgment.”
Biden wanted Americans to question their own beliefs and assume that what he was about to say about guns was true.
Gun violence
As to his assertion that “gun violence has become an epidemic in America,” this, too, is patently false.
As the National Shooting Sports Foundation pointed out last year — and hundreds of other writers have concluded since then — violent crime is decreasing while gun sales are skyrocketing.
According to the FBI’s 2019 Uniform Crime Report, violent crime has plummeted since 2010.
It is far from an epidemic.
In fact, gun deaths don’t even make the Top 10 list of causes of death according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Confrontational
The President’s assertion that “Look, I don't want to become more confrontational,” is revisionist in nature.
He has never shied away from being confrontational when addressing guns.
In August 2019, CNN’s evening news actor Anderson Cooper asked Biden what he would say to people who believe his administration would “come for their guns.”
“Bingo. You’re right if you have an assault weapon,” Biden replied. “The fact of the matter is, they should be illegal, period. Look, the Second Amendment doesn’t say you can’t restrict the kinds of weapons people can own. You can’t buy a bazooka. You can’t have a flame thrower.”
For gun owners, there is nothing more confrontational than federal agents on their doorstep seeking to take away their guns.
Loopholes
“We need more Senate Republicans to join the overall majority of Democratic colleagues and close the loopholes required in background check purchases of guns,” Biden said.
First, we don’t need Republican Senators to join anti-gun Democrats. The President does. We need more Democratic Senators to join with pro-gun Republicans.
As to the loopholes — quite frankly, there aren’t any loopholes.
In my humble opinion, there’s no better evidence when I factcheck than personal experience — evidence I’ve seen with my own eyes.
Every single gun show I’ve attended over the past five years has had one thing in common — everyone selling firearms was a federal firearms licensee — a licensed gun dealer.
As an FFL, they were prohibited from selling a firearm to anyone without a background check.
It’s nothing an FFL takes lightly.
I’ve received gifts from several personal friends who are manufacturers and licensed dealers. They had to run a background check on me before they could gift me a firearm, and they’re personal friends.
There’s no way any FFL would sell a firearm to a total stranger without conducting a background check. They could lose their livelihood and face criminal charges.
As to the President’s oft-cited “online loophole,” I challenge him, his administration or anyone else to show me a website that will sell me a firearm and ship it to my home without a background check.
No such website exists — period.
AWB
“We need a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines," Biden said.
There is no nexus between violent crime and Modern Sporting Rifles, according to an analysis of FBI data by the NSSF.
Violent crime continues to drop as more and more MSRs are sold.
Besides, we’ve tried an “assault weapon” ban before, and it accomplished nothing but raising prices of MSRs and standard-capacity magazines.
However, the most damning evidence against a federal AWB comes from the federal government itself — the United States Department of Justice.
The USDOJ researched the impact of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban.
For gun prohibitionists, the justice department report and several other subsequent reports are damning.
Perhaps the President should give them a read.

The man has been in politics 48 years, longer than I've been alive. His regard for the truth has been nonexistent for his entire career.
Also, they never used the phrase President Trump when they spoke so let's not given Biden the satisfaction, since he's a fake president. He's not my POTUS.
